7 Billion

Hey guys,

I found this short video recently and I think it explains our growing population in a really user friendly way. As Grace told us in class, our population reached 7 billion on October, 31. Influenced by a lot of the technological advances in medicine and food production, as we've learned, our population keeps growing at astronomical rates. However, it can't continue this way, as the video states. I'm not sure what measures should/could be taken in order to slow our growth, but it seems something needs to be done. What do you guys think?

  1. Reaching 7 billion is a really scary thing that our world has managed to do. As much as we would love to continue living the way we do and having whatever lifestyle we want, clearly, for our world to survive, we have to make some sacrifices. I think that our governments should give benefits to families who either adopt or only have one or two children per family. This would give people an incentive to reproduce less and take in children that were given up. I know personally I would love to have 4 or 5 children but there is a part of me that would feel extremely guilty bringing that many children into an already crowded world. We need to take personal responsibility for the choices we make and this includes adding to the new number of 7 billion.

  2. I agree with a lot of what Jenny stated in her comment. 7 billion is an absurd number and one that needs to decrease if the world is to survive. I'm not saying countries should start adopting China's one child policy or anything, but changes need to begin to be made. A lot of people would like to have 3 or 4 children, but we need to start realizing that we would be bringing these children into a world that as of now is not sustainable enough to continue the way things have been. Giving benefits to parents who only have 1 or 2 kids could work towards fixing this problem, especially for parents who can't afford to have more than that yet end up having 3 or 4 regardless. They would now have a reason to ensure that they do not have any more children.

  3. Our world population is something that definitely must be dealt with. However, I think it is going to be very hard to inform the third world countries where the birth rates are the highest. We are going to start running out of our natural resources.

  4. The fact that our population is growing at such an alarming rate is definitely something that we need to look at. It will be hard to accomodate this amount and make changes but we need to start looking at different ways to do things as well as watch how we are using things. If we don't, pretty soon all of our limited resources are going to run out and we are going to be left trying to figure something else to do. -Cara Caliendo

  5. The world is way too crowded right now. I certainly would not want to live in a world with say 8, 9, or 10 billion people. There would be too much of a strain on natural resources!
